M.A. Bongiovanni was founded in 1930
by Michael A. Bongiovanni, (1898-1980) and was operated as an individual
proprietorship until 1954, when the present name was adopted and incorporation
was made within the laws of New York State. The primary line of business at
inception was underground water and sewer pipelines. In 1949, Michaels' son
Joseph J. Bongiovanni Sr. graduated from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and joined the firm. He served as Vice President and then
President from 1954 to 1992, and then Chairman of the Board from 1992 until his
death in 1998. The current officers are Michael A. Bongiovanni, President, and
Joseph J. Bongiovanni Jr., Vice President. Both are grandsons of the founder.
Since 1949, construction activity and
interest expanded into the heavy civil projects such as water and
wastewater
treatment facilities and pumping stations, intercepting gravity sewers, force
mains, large diameter watermains, prime contracts for installation of process
piping and equipment at treatment plants, pile foundations, sewer repairs, steel
sheet piling, flood control, bridges and bridge jackings, and other varied heavy
construction. Generally, the company self-performs all excavation, underground piping,
concrete, miscellaneous metals, and process equipment and piping with it's own
personnel. Subcontracting is limited to architectural and specialty trades such
as masonry, roofing, painting, etc.
In 1979, the firm expanded outside the New
York State market, and since that time, has been performing water and
wastewater treatment plant and pumping station construction in New York,
Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware.
Administrative and management activity for
all the work is conducted at the Syracuse corporate office and includes project
management, engineering, estimating, scheduling, purchasing, accounting,
payroll, cost control and equipment maintenance. Close and continued contact is
maintained with project sites to insure that they receive the direction and
support required for the proper, timely and efficient performance of the work.
Project sites are manned with a competent superintendent responsible for
complete direction of construction operations and personnel. Additional field
staff is provided as necessary.
The firm maintains active membership in
the Associated Builders & Contractors, Inc. (ABC) and the Associated General
Contractors thru the General Building Contractors of New York State, Inc. (GBC).
